How to measure your stove glass

Getting the right size is the most important step. Follow this guide and you'll get it right first time.

Before you start

What you need:

  • A metal ruler or steel tape measure (not a fabric tape — they stretch)
  • A pencil and paper to note your dimensions
Always let your stove cool completely before opening the door or handling the glass.

Step by step

Remove the old glass (if still in place)

  1. Open the stove door and locate the glass retaining clips or frame.
  2. Carefully remove the clips and lift out the old glass.
  3. Clean away any old rope seal or debris from the frame rebate.
Don't measure the old glass — it may already be the wrong size. Measure the frame opening instead.

Measure the frame opening

Measure the width and height of the opening inside your stove door — the space where the glass sits. This is called the rebate opening.

  1. Measure the width at the widest point (side to side).
  2. Measure the height at the tallest point (top to bottom).
  3. Write both dimensions down in millimetres.

Deduct for clearance

Glass expands when heated, so it needs a small gap around the edge. Deduct 3–5mm from both the width and height before ordering.

Example: frame opening is 290 × 230mm → order glass at 285 × 225mm
If your stove has a rope seal around the glass, deduct only 2–3mm each side — the glass sits on top of the rope.

Double check before ordering

  • Measure twice before you order.
  • If in doubt, go slightly smaller — a small gap is fine, but glass that's too big won't fit.

  • Measuring the old glass instead of the frame opening
  • Using a fabric tape measure (they stretch and give inaccurate readings)
  • Forgetting to allow clearance for heat expansion
